The City of Berlin developed a joint digital and smart city strategy with the goal to develop actionable measures and projects for future-proofing Germany’s capital.
Digital X Energy was initiated to create a platform in which Berliners can engage with decision-makers, startups, and industry experts to understand what technologies and solutions better equip them for energy resilience.
These learnings were then made available through a series of short video interviews with experts and startup founders addressing the needs of renters, homeowners, developers, and businesses.
Context
The Russian invasion of Ukraine accelerated the already existing need for a more sound energy resilience strategy. This prompted the CDO of Berlin (Dr. Ralf Kleindiek) to think of new ways to tap into the power of civil society, the startup ecosystem, and other urban actors to find solutions for reducing, producing, and storing energy, all in the perspective of Gemeinsam Digital: Berlin - the joint digital and smart city strategy of the city.
Our Role
We teamed up with the Gemeinsam Digital: Berlin team to create a new engagement format that looks at innovative and resilient solutions and the people developing them. This set of online and offline initiatives provides concrete guidance on actions Berliners can take to be part of the solution and puts the spotlight on the minds behind those ideas.
Results
Digital X Energy resulted in a fruitful networking event, a series of 4 videos addressing homeowners, renters, real estate developers, and businesses, as well as an interactive map featuring Berlin-based startups tackling energy topics—setting the stage for transforming the energy ecosystem of Germany’s capital. The outcomes were published on a project page that features all components as well as further support and programs for Berliners.
